Volunteering

Ways to support the Ministry of St Margaret’s Church

Making sure that events run smoothly, refreshments are available after our Sunday service and the church is well maintained requires a team of willing volunteers lending a hand and making themselves available to help on a regular basis.

We would be delighted if you would consider joining one or more of the teams that help to keep the church running efficiently, clean and beautiful.

There are various teams ranging from those that help with flowers, tea and coffee, church cleaning, Open House events, children’s and youth work and community outreach.

Flowers

Flowers adorning the church bring joy and colour to our worship setting. There are various feasts and special occasions when we have larger displays and we can also provide arrangements for personal events such as weddings, baptisms, funerals and concerts.

You don’t have to be an expert to help with flower displays, so don’t be put off if you’ve never done it before. Please contact Fiona Morrison to find out more and sign up.

Children’s and Youth Work

Helping with Children’s work can be very rewarding and enjoyable. The Children's Church, Creche and Youth Group sessions are led by a team of helpers drawn from the church congregation and parents of those who attend the sessions. We strongly encourage all parents of those who attend to join our rota and support the team. We don't require any previous experience and none of us are teachers! You will always be on with at least one other parent and until you are comfortable with taking a session, this will be an experienced volunteer. Sign up and have a go - it's great fun and a good way to meet other parents in the church. Please contact the office for further information.

Refreshments – Tea and Coffee

After our services, everyone is welcome to join us for coffee and tea in the Crypt. Again, this is a team effort and you wouldn’t have to do a turn every week. Our kitchen is well equipped and there are good systems so the whole process should be trouble free. The more of us that volunteer with teas and coffees, the less frequently we’ll have to take our turns. To sign up please contact Wyn Kirkman.

Cleaning

St Margaret’s church is kept clean and tidy by our teams of volunteers who come in to clean for a couple of hours every other Saturday. As there are four teams you will only have to come in once every eight weeks and if for any reason you can't make a session it is possible to swap with another volunteer. Working in teams, the job gets done speedily so the more of us that are on the rota, the less time tasks will take. Cleaning the church might not sound very exciting but is vital and enables us to keep the church in a good condition for years to come. Contact Marion Scott for further information.

St Margaret's Open Days

The Church is now open on the first Saturday of every month and on other occasions when we might have an exhibition.

We operate two hour shifts from 10.30am to 12.30pm; from 12.30pm to 2.30pm and from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Most of our stewards help on a regular basis but we are flexible in the arrangements to suit the individuals. Some people like to do the same time, on the same day of the month, others like to pair up with friends, others will help from time to time. We always have three people on duty.

Whilst knowledge and expertise are wonderful, most of our stewards are learning as they go along. We have a lot of information which seems to be increasing as more people come to visit.

To find out more and to help out, please contact Cilla Bartlett or call the church office on 020 8318 9643. The office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10.00am and 2.00pm.

Darby and Joan Club

The Darby and Joan Club is a weekly club for pensioners which operates on a Tuesday in the Kingswood Halls, Kingswood Place SE13 5BU, between 11.45am and 2.00pm. We serve tea and biscuits, have a raffle and some form of entertainment between 1.00pm and 2.00pm.

We should like to extend the facilities, possibly including a lunch, or extending the hours and including a tea. However to do that we need personnel who would be prepared to take this on.  For the catering, we should need at least one person with catering qualifications and expertise.

Sometimes we need help with our weekly Tuesday meetings.

We do occasionally have someone who needs to be driven to and from the Club and we usually like to have a couple of people whom we can call on if the need arises.

To find out more and to help out, please call the church office on 020 8318 9643 or email us at office@stmargaretslee.org.uk. The office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10.00am and 2.00pm.
